How to Get a Portuguese NIF While Living Abroad: Complete Guide

The Tax Identification Number (NIF) is, in practice, the gateway to any immigration process in Portugal. Without it you can't open a bank account, sign a lease, get a mobile phone plan, enroll your children in school, or even submit a visa application in many cases. That's why it's usually the very first step, even before leaving your home country.

This guide explains who can apply for a NIF remotely, what documents you'll need, and how to avoid the mistakes that delay the process the most.

What is the NIF and what is it for

The NIF is a unique number issued by the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority (AT) that identifies every taxpayer before the Portuguese State. Any individual or legal entity with any kind of relationship to the Portuguese economy needs one, even before actually living in the country.

Important note: having a NIF does not mean having a residence permit. These are completely separate processes: the NIF is a tax matter, while a visa or residence permit is an immigration matter. One does not replace the other.

Who can apply for a NIF without being in Portugal

Citizens from outside the European Union who don't yet have Portuguese residency are required to appoint a tax representative — a person or entity based in Portugal responsible for representing the applicant before the Tax Authority. EU, European Economic Area, or Swiss citizens can, in many cases, apply for a NIF directly, without a representative.

There are three main ways to get a NIF remotely:

  1. Through a Portuguese lawyer or solicitor acting as tax representative, who submits the application on your behalf.
  2. Through companies that specialize in remote NIF applications, which charge a service fee that already includes acting as your tax representative.
  3. In person at a Portuguese consulate in your home country, where this service is available — usually the slowest option, but without an intermediary fee.

Documents usually required

  • Copy of a valid passport or national ID card.
  • Proof of address in your home country (utility bill, recent bank statement, etc.).
  • Tax representative appointment form, when applicable.
  • Power of attorney, if applying through a lawyer or specialized service.

Common mistakes that delay the process

  • Sending a proof of address older than three months.
  • Signing the power of attorney with a name that doesn't exactly match the one on your passport.
  • Not notifying your tax representative when you move, which can lead to missed tax notices and fines.
  • Confusing the NIF with the Social Security Number (NISS), which is only issued after you have a work contract or residence registration.

After getting your NIF: what to do next

Once you have your NIF, the next step is usually opening a Portuguese bank account (many banks already allow remote account opening for future residents) and, depending on the visa you're pursuing, gathering proof of income and a lease agreement — documents that most Portuguese residence visas require.

If you're still not sure which visa fits your situation, the Documents tab of your Journey in HIMMIH automatically organizes the list of what you need, in the right order, and you can always talk to one of the platform's [immigration specialists for Portugal](/specialists) to validate your specific case before moving forward.
