Cost of Living in Portugal in 2026: How Much You Need to Emigrate Safely

One of the most common questions from people thinking about emigrating to Portugal is: how much money do I need to live safely? The answer changes a lot depending on the city, your lifestyle, and whether you live alone or with family, but there's a realistic reference point.

Housing: the biggest monthly cost

Rent is by far the biggest expense in most Portuguese budgets, especially in Lisbon and Porto:

  • Lisbon: a T1 (one-bedroom apartment) outside the city center usually ranges from €800 to €1,200; in the center, prices go up significantly.
  • Porto: generally 15% to 25% cheaper than Lisbon for the same type of property.
  • Mid-sized cities and inland areas (Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro, Faro outside peak season): it's usually possible to find a T1 for €500 to €750.
Tip: always ask for a formal lease agreement and a rent receipt. Besides being a legal protection for the tenant, it's frequently required for visa applications and for registering your address with the tax authority.

Food and groceries

A couple with moderate habits usually spends between €300 and €450 per month on groceries. Eating out is relatively affordable outside tourist areas: a daily set menu at a popular restaurant costs around €8 to €12.

Transportation

Monthly public transport passes in major cities (metro, bus, urban train) usually cost between €30 and €40, with significant discounts for people under 23 and for retirees. Anyone who doesn't need a car can get by well without one in the main cities.

Healthcare

The National Health Service (SNS) is available to legal residents, with low co-payments for appointments and exams. Many people still choose supplementary private health insurance, which usually costs between €30 and €80 per month per person, depending on age and coverage.

Monthly estimate by profile

  1. Single person, mid-sized city: about €1,100 to €1,400 (rent, food, transport, and fixed expenses).
  2. Couple with no children, Lisbon or Porto: about €1,800 to €2,400.
  3. Family with two children, mid-sized city: about €2,200 to €3,000, factoring in daycare or school as well.

These figures are general estimates and vary with exchange rates, inflation, and each family's lifestyle — they're a starting point, not a guarantee.

How much is worth having saved before you travel

Beyond the monthly budget, it's wise to arrive with a reserve equal to at least three to six months of expenses, to cover the adjustment period, any delays in finding a job, and upfront costs like a rental deposit (usually one to three months' rent) and basic furniture.
